Vermicomposting – Layering A Bin

Sunday, May 22, 2011

Last time I looked (Sunday, April 24, 2011) the winterizing bin was settled down nicely.

This morning I fixed a leaky tap in the kitchen sink. What better use for those bags of flyers that get hung on my door, eh?

Armed with a handful of damp newsprint I’ve decided to lay them on top of the contents of the bin.

My theory is that the moisture will condense on the underside of the plastic sheet cover, drip onto the paper, and the worms will come up and start living within the newsprint.

Initially any bacterial growth will be in the lowest layer, but if the worms poop on the surface – as they are wont to do – then bacterial solution will begin to filter downwards through the paper.

If my theory is correct, then a further experiment would be to lay food scraps on the paper, and cover that with a few more sheets of newsprint – no need to tear or shred the paper at all!
