Fines

Monday, June 20, 2011

(This bin is diarized in Vermicomposting – Bin V005 ).

No, not financial fines, fines as in “fine material”.

I scooped a couple of gallons of soil and castings from the top three or four inches of the hamster tray and sieved it into a pail.

The coarse material went back into the hamster tray.

The sieved material made a cone of material on a large black plastic garbage bag.

I spooned through it all, rescuing a dozen juicy worms, which went back to the hamster tray.

The fine material went into one of my (emptied out) kitchen counter-top min-vermicomposters.

Also known as an empty kitty-litter jug.

The jug is about 2/3 full.

The loose-lid is replaced, and the jug sits under an office table.

If the worms escape I’ll spot them!

Otherwise, the theory goes, the eggs and wormlets will basically eat themselves to death over a period of several months and deliver to me a jug full of dried granular castings.
