Quantifier - Sample Results

In this document we have pasted the charts from a real, albeit small, test run of the Quantifier application.

Below each chart we have entered a few comments.

The y-axis of each chart shows the document count. The lower the top value on the y-axis, the more evenly-spread are the documents in the charted characteristic.

The x-axis of the chart runs from zero to the maximum count encountered. It follows that a bar rising to 600 in the zero column indicates that the characteristic is not a major issue (see the chart for Form Fields). It follows too that the right-most value label on the x-axis indicates at least one document with that many items being charted (see the chart for Bookmarks).

Bookmarks - First Impressions

400 documents have no bookmarks at all.

200 documents have less than 238 bookmarks per document

1 document has 2380 bookmarks!

Second Impressions

I’d like an analysis of documents without that rogue on the right hand side!

I didn’t realize that my people made such an extensive use of bookmarks.

Decision

More analysis required

Fields - First Impressions

450 documents have no fields.

150 documents have 27 fields or less.

25 documents have between 28 and 135 fields.

One document has 270 fields.

Second Impressions

Fields might be an issue on which we need to work.

Decision

More analysis required.

Paragraphs - First Impressions

Most (600+) documents have less than 12,000 paragraphs. We don’t learn much by this.

One document has 100,000 paragraphs. What is this?

Second Impressions

We have a few massive documents.

I’d like an analysis of documents without that rogue on the right hand side! It might be our friend from the bookmarks chart.

Decision

More analysis required.

A list of offending files is called for.

Sections - First Impressions

500 documents have 4 sections.

100 documents have 1 section.

A few (total 20?) documents have between 6 and 11 sections.

Second Impressions

The sections are probably related to my page-heading mechanism, which uses first-page headers and footers, different for later pages. I suspect these come in pairs, two at a time, hence 4 sections for 500 documents, but 100 documents without any page header or trailer at all.

We need to confirm my assumption. If true, then sections is not a big issue.

Decision

More analysis required.

A few (6?) documents have 2 to 4 shapes.

One document has 20 shapes.

Second Impressions

Shapes is not an issue on which we need to work.

Decision

No action needed.

Smart Tags - First Impressions

Most documents have no smart tags.

One document has 20 smart tags.

Second Impressions

What are smart tags anyway?

Decision

No further analysis needed.

Tables - First Impressions

400 documents have no tables.

150 documents have one or two tables.

Some (50?) documents have up to 20 tables.

Second Impressions

Tables are not an issue.

Unless all the table documents come from one folder, in which case we may be able to apply some standard formatting, layout, and so on.

Decision

No action needed.
