80% of Your Fuel Contributes to Global Warming

I read some two or three years ago that 80% of a car's fuel is dissipated as heat through the water-cooling system (engine block, water jacket, water pump and front-of-car radiator). Today I cannot find that reference, but a search for "80% car fuel is heat loss" turns up these three pages:-

... which each in their own way suggest that something like 80% of the gasoline fuel that you purchase at the pump is dissipated as heat through the cooling system.

What would that mean? Well, for every litre of petrol or gallon of gasoline that you pump into your car's fuel tank, eighty-percent of each litre or gallon heats water that is then cooled and that heat energy flows directly into the air.

That means that for every dollar that you spend on petrol or gasoline at the pump, eighty cents is used solely to heat the air around you; not to move your car forward, but to heat air, as much as if you had a campfire strapped to the roof of your car.

Talk about causes of global warming!

In Canada a $100 fill-up of gasoline for your standard 4- or 6-cylinder car has you paying $80 to contribute to Global Warming (a.k.a. climate change).

And note that this is heat dissipated by your front-of-car radiator. We are not talking about climate change brought about by greenhouse gas effects from the exhaust pipe of your car. We are talking here about heat energy that just could not be used at all to move your car forward.

You are shelling out your hard-earned cash to push heat into our shared atmosphere.

Show me a car driver who complains about climate change, and I'll show you a hypocrite.
