Rephrasing The Problem

We want to know the maximum number of drivers per second that can be got home safely.

We could express that as “Find the speed at which we should all be traveling to maximize the number of cars per second passing any specific point on the highway lane.”.

Since speed and time are related to distance, we can also think of this as “What is the maximum number of cars we can fit into a space at any given speed?”.

We will start off by assembling a few known quantities, and establish them as facts. Don’t worry about my assumptions; you can make changes to satisfy your own whims, and I won’t mind at all.
