Augen Capital Corp. based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, is a merchant bank specializing in the financing of and investment in resource companies or projects.

Like most businesses, they hunger for information that will lead to new and profitable activities. The data is out there!

The problem: How to get the data, and how to filter it from the volumes that are available?

Several web sites provide fiscal data on publicly traded companies, amongst them Google Finance , Yahoo Finance and Microsoft Money Central .

A list of publicly-traded companies on the Toronto Stock Exchange is readily available.

An application was developed, driven by the list of about 4,500 companies that scoured the fiscal data sites and extracted about a half-dozen key figures for each company. The figures were ‘crunched’ to yield a score.

The resulting companies, presented as a sorted list, provided a shopping-list for the banker’s expansion.
