ESBE Scientific

How ESBE Scientific migrated their local quotations application from Corel WordPerfect to Microsoft Word while expanding its utility nation-wide.

The existing application was built in-house in a piece-meal fashion on a stale system over a number of years by a single member of staff to serve his small group of accounts.

The staff member was scheduled to retire in one month.

From ESBE’s point of view, the Corel WordPerfect code had to be translated to Microsoft Word VBA; the transcribed application had to be running faultlessly within one month. ESBE had no VBA expertise on site.

I defined the application starting at the top level and working my way down to the detailed level. The definition included the goal and all the measurable objectives of the application. The definition was delivered within one week of the start date.

I wrote a new, clean application based on the new and approved specifications and delivered a fully-functional version within three weeks of the start date.

The staff member retired gracefully. The new application is flexible enough to run nation-wide across all accounting groups, adapting automatically to both official languages. The supporting data base of text and images is standardized. The application and especially its running parameters and support material are maintained in-house by two staff members at minimal cost.

ESBE Scientific is no longer dependent on specialized knowledge. The application can be maintained by any VBA programmer.
