Installation (And Troubleshooting)
Free Download of the 1-Click Indexer
Indxr.dot can be installed by you quite easily, Manually Or Automatically.
I provide detailed instructions for installation under each version of Microsoft Office.
For a summary of environments in which it has been tested, please see Compatible Systems .
The Supplied ZIP File
You may have received a ZIP file; I urge everyone to distribute the ZIP file rather than the individual files.
If you have any doubts about the integrity of the ZIP file you receive from a colleague, get your Free Download of the 1-Click Indexer here.
If you have any questions about the wisdom of installing a Word template, please Contact Me .
Please create a fresh folder on your hard drive and unzip the ZIP file to that folder. Do NOT try to execute the files from within the ZIP file.
If you are using a Windows unzipper, close down all the unzipper windows before proceeding further with the installation.
The ZIP file contains several files:
2009/09/22 15:25 PKZIP(R) Version 2.50 FAST! Compression Utility for Windows 95/NT 4-15-1998 Copyright 1989-1998 PKWARE Inc. All Rights Reserved. Shareware Version PKZIP Reg. U.S. Pat. and Tm. Off. The date and time of creation are shown at the top of the LOG file which is embedded in the ZIP file.
The ZIP file has been created with an authentic copy of Phil Katz's PKZIP2.5.EXE from http://www.pkware.com/ .
Indxr.dot
This file contains the Interesting Words engine and a front-end indexing tool. The Indexing tool is probably why you are here.
The VBA code is locked.
ReadMeWD.txt
This short file contains a brief view of the steps you need to take for automatic installation. The steps are covered in more detail on this page.
Setup078.dot
This file is a general-purpose installation routine that will manage installation of Microsoft Word templates and Excel application libraries.
The VBA code is unlocked and you may inspect it. To do so, from Microsoft Word, choose File, open; browse to the file Setup078.dot and HOLD DOWN THE SHIFT KEY while clicking Open or OK. The SHIFT key will inhibit the autoexec macro .
UserGuide.doc
This guide contains more than enough material to get you started using the 1-click Indxr, modify the rules table, and explore some of the advanced features.
The online User guide will always be the most current source of information.
If you are a developer and would like to tap into the Interesting Words Engine's power, please go to Software Development Kit (SDK) .
UW.DOT
This file contains my library of utility functions for Microsoft Word. A similar file is available for Excel.
The VBA code is locked.
If you are a developer and would like to tap into the utility Library, please Contact Me or read more at UW.DOT Library .
Manual Installation
You have unzipped the ZIP file to a fresh folder.
Shut down all copies of Microsoft Word.
- If you use Microsoft Outlook, you are advised to re-boot, since Outlook will sometimes retain a hidden copy of Word in memory.
You can check that no copies of Word are running by g Ctrl-Alt-Del to invoke the Task Manager.
Select the Processes tab, Click on the column heading Image name to sort in descending sequence, locate WinWord.exe (if it exists!) and then choose End process.
Close the Task Manager dialog box.
The Indxr.dot and the UW.dot must be installed to the same folder.
If you want Indxr to be available only to you, then drag a copy of the two files to the folder "C:\Documents and Settings\ChrisL\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP", substituting your user name where I have used "ChrisL".
If you want Indxr to be available to every user on your computer, then drag a copy of the two files to the folder "C:\Program Files\Office\Office2000\Office\Startup".
If you want Indxr to be available to every user on your Local Area network, please contact your manager or IT support team.
Next time you load Word, you should see the small-footprint Indxr toolbar:
Automatic Installation
You have unzipped the ZIP file to a fresh folder.
Shut down all copies of Microsoft Word.
If you use Microsoft Outlook, you are advised to re-boot, since Outlook will sometimes retain a hidden copy of Word in memory.
Set your macro security settings to LOW (please see below "Office Security Settings" for help with this). Yes, I know this is scary, but it's only while you run the Setup078.dot file; after installation is complete you can set your security settings back to medium.
Execute the Setup078.dot file from your fresh folder.
Installation takes about ten seconds.
During that ten seconds, Setup078.dot will rename any earlier out-of-date versions of UW.dot or Indxr.dot with a 4-digit extent; Word will ignore them, but you can leave them in place should you want to roll-back to an earlier version.
Setup078.dot will MOVE (not COPY!) the UW.dot and Indxr.dot files from your fresh folder to your local user startup folder "C:\Documents and Settings\ChrisL\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP".
Once Setup078.dot has completed the installation, it will throw up a text file with the installation log.
Save this file and/or print it for your records.
Next time you load Word, you should see the small-footprint Indxr toolbar:
Troubleshooting
(1) UW.dot will still not install.
If you are using F-prot, please read To Get Around FProt Antivirus by Lily E. Chambers
If you think a virus-checker is blocking it, then that is probably because the checker sees a 'signature" string within the current version of UW.dot. please and I will arrange for slightly different version of UW.dot to be shipped to you; that might 'shift' the bits enough to get by your overly-sensitive virus-checker.
Or try switching to Grisoft. http://free.avg.com/ww-en/download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition
(2) If you do not see the Indxr toolbar,
choose View, Toolbars and check on the Indxr toolbar:
(3) If you do not see the toolbar there,
check Tools, Templates and Addins to make sure that you have placed the two templates correctly:
(4) If you still don't see the templates in place,
or if one of them is missing, I suggest that you try the tried, true and tested Automatic Installation before you Contact Me .
(5) SetUp opens a blank word document
“Under the ReadMeWD instructions, step 2, it directs me to Execute the SetUp.DOT template. The only thing I am getting is something titled SetUp079 which opens a blank word document.”
Chances are that you were running this a second time.
The first time it runs it moves the Indxr and UW templates from the unzipped folder to the Word Startup folder.
The second time you run Setup, it finds no templates to be moved.
Unzip the zip file again into a new folder.
From within that folder (NOT from within the zip file listing!) run the Setup template.
It should present you with a text file (Notepad) being a log of its operations.
Please email that log to me.
