(4) Will any part of Indxr's macros or other plug-ins travel with my document to my client?
Absolutely not. Indexer remains on your system.
Your clients documents will be enhanced with {XE} fields and an index field at the back of the document.
If your clients are worried about field codes, you could hard-code the results with a quick Ctrl-A, Shift-F9 ["Fisher Price English" needed here, please]

(20) When did you develop this tool, and why did you wait so long to release it?
Good question. I can't remember whether I developed it in Word 6.0 or Word 97. My first effort was being used, by me, in 1997, that I know. I was developing one-off one-day courses at Vision Computer Associates. I have upgraded the product over the years. I have made several presentations to technical groups, but not until this year did Julia Wooster of http://www.primeadminsolutions.com/ get a copy and take control of me to the extent of this issue.
You and I owe Julia a great deal.
(21) Is it really all that painful to create an index by hand in Microsoft Word?
Good question. Here's the answer. (I bet you don't stay to watch the whole video)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2hY5P09Cbwk
Here's my alternative:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmxuU5LJYj4
(22) Does it matter that I have an automated Table of Contents already in place at the top of the page?
No. Indexer will work through your entire document. Of course, that means it will also index the words in your Table Of Contents, so you may want to delete the table while you run Indexer.
Yes, I know that's a bit of extra work, but look at how many hours you've saved by using Indexer!
(23) I decided to try it on 152 pages. The screen went white and it's been about 2 minutes.
By the time you read this you'll know the answer.
Indexer runs at about one second per page; or if you prefer – one page per second, and yes, quantities my vary.
Please visit our Timing Page and check the figures which have been contributed by our band of happy users.
If this is your first shot at Indexer, we recommend you Index a few smaller documents (10 or 20 pages) to get the hang of it before embarking on that 562-page autobiography you've been dying to publish.
(24) Why does UW.dot not install?
Please visit our Troubleshooting Page . But please don't shoot the page; it's just the messenger.
(25) Our corporate site is locked-down and our IT people are paranoid about viruses, will you process a large number of large documents for us for a fee?
Yes, Real Soon Now(™) we will institute a corporate service that does just that. Especially for you!
The concordance table(s) will be included so that you can adjust or tweak them and re-use them to produce consistently indexed documents.
(26) Can I play with more of your programs?
Yes. Please.
Visit my Downloads page.
I am considering doing what Julia Wooster helped me do with Indexer with four other programs and will be looking for eager and skilled volunteers to help me test the download, installation and basic running.

MRUse |
Beats Microsoft's offering at the foot of the File menu hands down! Includes all files – doc, xls, jpg, exe, not just the Word documents. You can run your day from my MRUse! Better file list than that provided by MS Word. Sort by path, name, date saved, date used etc. Remembers last-place used, without bookmarks! Now absorbs MRU for Excel & Word from Office 97 through Office 12! Now absorbs BMP, PDF, many more. TRY IT! Now provides an option to auto-set your Documents path. (I have a version for Excel, too, if you are interested in trying it out). MRUse is a free, powerful tool that runs under Word 2000 or later and speeds up your access to your Most Recently Used files. You can modify MRUse's behavior to suit your tastes in any way you like. Generic rules-based mechanism extracts maximum information in smallest possible text. Customizable, unlike MSWord's "AutoSummarize". More control over the generation of a précis than is provided by MSWord's AutoSummarize feature. |
TrailBlazer |
Automatically build a trail of hyperlinked words throughout your document. A collection of macros helps you navigate through your document. TrailBlazer hyperlinks a trail through a document linking all occurrences of given text or pre-defined text strings. Blaze hyperlinked trails through a document, linking Interesting Words or Phrases. |
Under |
This application provides Macro Utilities for the User, all those quirky things I feel I need to do in MS Word. Contains over eight hundred macros that simplify and speed up your work in Microsoft Word. |
ZoomP |
You regularly run printouts from Excel worksheets. All too often the page setup leaves vast areas of paper unused. You would like a means to make best use of each sheet of paper. Here is the solution! My ZOOMP Page Setup add-in provides both end-user macros and a developer interface that allows you to determine the best zoom factor and page orientation to yield the optimum use of paper. No more sheets with the right-hand edge of your print area overflowing to the left margin of the next page. |
I think of MRUse as the obvious successor to Indexer - it extends Word's File list (foot of the File menu) to a much greater number of files, of all extents(!), sorted anyway you like. MRUse includes a true AutoSave and an Audit trail feature.
TrailBlazer blazes a trail of hyperlinks through your forest of words in a document. If you've run Indexer on a document, you can trail blaze the entire document with just one click.
Under The Hood has 600+ or 800+ (I keep forgetting) macros that do unbelievably cool stuff (I get bored easily) including the ability to Auto format all tables in a document to a single style. Consistency. Its calendar wizard uses STYLES (so you can split a day into morning and afternoon!) and allows weeks of any length (such as ten days for oil rigs), and aligns the day number according to the day specified in the leftmost column. In English, French, German or Spanish, Long or Short forms.
ZoomP is an Excel add-in that works out the optimally Zoom factor (hence "ZOOM Pages"), in Portrait, Landscape or both, so you never again get those stupid pages with one orphaned column/row of data and the rest of the page empty.
(27) Why is it spelled "Indexer" instead of "Indexer"?
I took all the ease out of the name and put them in the program.

(28) Now that I have my concordance table, this will create all entries in my index, but what if I wanna add some specific sub-entries? How could I auto generate a concordance table for main entries and one for sub entries?
If you explore the help files for Word you will see that the Cross-Reference form include the ability to interject phrases like "See Also" and so on. I splice these into an Index entry in the full paid version.
(29) Besides, how do I erase or eliminate all the entries I've added from my concordance table? (for example, if I generated a concordance table, then auto mark all the entries from it.) but if later on I don't want those entries, how do I delete them.
You can delete all {XE} fields in a document with the Indexer macro RemoveAll{XE}Entries.
That done, merely re-index the document with your concordance table. Think of the concordance table as the source of your Index. Think of the index only as a manifestation of your concordance table. The Indexer is really only a front end for the Interesting Words machine; that machine CAN build a concordance table, and armed with that table one CAN build an index - this is a bonus for the average end-user. An above-average writer would see the Indexer as a useful first-step towards the creation of a Concordance table. If I were writing for technical writers, I'd write a Concordance-table-maintenance suite that would allow writers to juggle concordance tables - they are the source of useful information!
(30) I installed Indexer today. I’m looking to update the config and tell it additional words to match on and words to be removed. However, for the life of, I cannot fathom out where to do this.
The top two places for adjustments are (1) The Rules table and (2) The "noise words" files.
(1) The Rules table If you go look in a location similar to:- C:\Users\ChrisC\AppData\Roaming\Greaves\Indxr Replacing "ChrisC" with your own user name, but leaving the "Greaves" intact, you should find a file called:- IndxrRules01.doc or similar. This file (IndxrRules01.doc) is a regular Word document with a table of rules. The default rules (generated by Indexer first time it is run) ask for capitalized words between 4 and 25 characters in length. That's a "proper noun" filter. You can modify your rules table using this write-up as a guide:- http://www.chrisgreaves.com/indxr.ca/therulesTable.htm
(2) The "noise words" In the same folder (C:\Users\ChrisC\AppData\Roaming\Greaves\Indxr) you should find three text files:- Noises1.txt, Months1.txt, and Places1.txt. These are sample noise-words list that can be used either to INclude or EXclude specific words from your index. You can modify their content at will, or clone them and use the clones as arguments to the InFile command in your Rules table.
(31) Why don’t you supply a Concordance Manager?
I will, “Real Soon Now”. I’m looking for THREE souls willing to test it.
(32) Where is Indexer’s concordance file stored?
The Microsoft Word document used as a source for the concordance file is generated as “C:\Users\ChrisC\AppData\Roaming\Greaves\Indxr\Indxr.059”, however this is just detritus left behind at the end of the run.
If you want to, you can open this document and convert it to a 2-column table (as in Tables, Convert, text to table) and then pass this to Word (as in Insert, Reference, Index and tables, AutoMark).
(33) Something’s broken. Every time I try to run the indexer, I keep getting a VBasic pop up. It’s blank with just an OK button. I can’t get it to index any more
This is probably caused by a missing or damaged file somewhere.
This ought to solve your problem in 95% of these cases:
Shut down Microsoft Word.
Rename your folder “C:\Users\ChrisC\AppData\Roaming\Greaves\Indxr\” to be “C:\Users\ChrisC\AppData\Roaming\Greaves\OLDIndxr\” or similar; this should effectively hide the old files from Indexer.
Load Microsoft Word; Indexer will load and notice that it has no files. Indexer will re-create a default set of files.
Edit-in what you need from your “OLDIndxr” folder files to your refreshed files.
(34) I see the paragraph count incrementing and just after I think it has finished that. On win 7, the window stops counting after a while and says “Not Responding” but I suspect it completes that pass. I always see the Not Responding even when it works
This annoys me, too. Windows/Office have (to me) an annoying habit of ignoring the screen updating/refreshing. Right now I don’t know what to do about it. I’m sorry.
I recommend, always, to start off by running Indexer on a mercifully-short edition of a large document, say cut down to 20 pages, to get an idea of how long it takes. Then try 50 pages, then 100.
Once you know how fast your system wades through stuff you can have some confidence in how long you might have to leave Indexer to get the job done.
My general rule is one-second-per-page, 60 pages per minute. Quantities WILL vary!
(35) I use a lot of I’ve, Don’t, Can’t etc…. namely the use of apostrophe. Can Indexer ignore the apostrophe trail? For example if Can is ignored, it should ignore Can’t.
Good question. I will try to come up with a technique to deal with this.
In the meantime you might try putting all these entries into a noise-file such as Noises1.txt.
(36) Indexer is not very professional; it doesn’t come close to what a human can do in terms of quality.
That is so. I agree. I think it makes sense for Indexer to do the brute-force approach and THEN just edit the Concordance Table.
If, as a professional indexer, you think of Indexer as building a Concordance Table, rather than an Index, then you’ll find that by extracting all the Interesting Words, Indexer has presented you with a manageable Concordance Table, instead of an un-manageable and very complex document.
(37) Am I correct in assuming that the more documents you index, potentially the more entries will be added to this file?
Sadly, no; you are IN correct. Nice try though (grin)
Each time you run Indexer, Indxr.059 is re-created.
Since Indxr.059 represents the cheap'n'nasty concordance table, you might want to rename it and accumulate efforts.
(38) Can I "edit" this Indxr.059 file in Word myself or are there issues in doing that?
Happily YES! (next grin)
Try this:
- Edit the Indxr.059 and save it with a new name MyAutoMark.DOC.
- Convert it to a 2-column table (as in Tables, Convert, text to table) and save it and close it.
- Now open a new document, one of the 30 you've NOT yet indexed, and choose Insert, Reference, Index and tables, AutoMark.
- Browse to MyAutoMark.DOC and Word will produce an Index for you, marking words (in the new document) that correspond to entries in the MyAutoMark.DOC.
Of course, some really good words in the new document WON'T be indexed because they DON'T appear in MyAutoMark.DOC.
So :-
- Remove all the {XE} fields from your new document (macro on toolbar "RemoveAll{XE}Entries)
- Edit save and close MyAutoMark.DOC to add a couple of new words or phrases
- Open that new document, and choose Insert, Reference, Index and tables, AutoMark.
You should see the new phrases/words indexed.
(39) Is it possible to put a "newline" or "cr" before the INDEX Heading (e.g. something like "\n~~~~A~~~"? Or I guess I could replace it with just a blank line...possible e.g. " "?
You can change the heading for each section of the Index by running the macro GUIEnvironment and changing the text box for “Heading”; try changing it to be “**A**”, without the quotes.
Microsoft Word will allow you to use a blank line between groups of entries in the {Index} field.
Look for the filed switch/option:-
\h " "
(40) Where is the uninstaller?
What?!!??? You’d consider removing this fine tool from your system?
(grin)
I need to address the issue of UnInstall.
I used to have an uninstaller, but it didn't work well, so I withdrew it.
Part of the problem was running a Word application to remove itself.
MSWord doesn’t let me unhook a template (and delete it) while it is running program code. hah hah!
Your comment however gives me reason to think about it again.
I suspect I'll come up with a solution.
Please stay tuned.
