RIGHT-CLICK and Send To/Open With

Faced with a file whose extent, type, or contents are unknown, your best bet is to open the file with Notepad and take a look before doing anything else.

Why Notepad? Because it is a simple-minded text editor, doesn’t support any macro automation. It just let’s you look at stuff inside a file.

On the suspect file, right-click the mouse to bring up the context-sensitive menu, then choose Send To, or failing that choose Open With, and pick Notepad from that list.

You’ll see some gobbledygook to be sure, but you will also see incriminating evidence of the authorship or parentage of the file.

You can augment your Send To menu by adding shortcuts to your C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Send To folder.

You can investigate your Open With menu (in Windows XP) by holding down the SHIFT key while you right-click the file name. Add a new program to the list by choosing the BROWSE button.

Experts: If you want to remove an item from the Open With list you’ll need to open RegEdit, go to the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.DAT section. Right-click on the appropriate file extension registry key in the left pane. Select Delete. Select Yes, you are sure.
