Never Close, Revisited

In a previous lesson I tried to convince you not to close any programs that you have open.

In this lesson I want to cover two instances where you might really need to close a program.

Example 1:

Excel is a classic example. You load Excel and discover that you need to change a setting such as Macro Security. You need to shut down Excel for the changes to take effect, then re-open Excel with the changes in effect. Many other Windows applications exhibit this weird behavior.

Close down any application by using the Alt-F4 combination; hold down the Alt key and tap the F4 function key.

Example 2:

At the end of the day (or before your lunch break) you want to shut down your computer completely.

Don't close your applications; let Windows do that for you. After all, computers are good at doing boring repetitive tasks.

You can use the Ctrl-Esc sequence to access the Turn-off-computer (Ctrl-Esc-U)

Choose the Shutdown or Restart option, and watch while Windows:

1: Asks if you want to save any unsaved work and

2: Closes Solitaire, Minesweeper, your web browser, and any other application that requires no intervention on your part.

I'm saving you so much time you should buy me a coffee and a donut!
