For six years of my life I drank water that arrived in the little desert town, flowing by gravity from Mundaring Weir, elevation 450 feet and 200 miles away to Southern Cross at an elevation of 1,190 feet.
How an engineer in the late 1890s transformed a vast and rich region into a chain of thriving communities is a story rarely told.
It involves Western Australia’s overbearing richness, the impact on federation, and a continuing miracle of life.
