PROJEct Blows 60 Megabytes
Tuesday, November 03, 2009
Ten years ago Chris conceived the idea of aggregating every scrap of VBA program code on his hard drive into a single searchable library.
This week the Harvester amassed over 60,000,000 bytes of VBA code in a searchable form.
What Does this Mean?
It means that Chris continues to develop applications for you in record-setting times.
Averse to re-inventing the wheel, Chris can develop code by assembling proven components from existing stock – usually a ten-second task – rather than struggling to rewrite common code from scratch.
And let’s be honest; it is not the time taken to key in the lines of code that costs, it is the time taken to specify, document and test the code that becomes the real penalty.
How Does it Work?
It is so simple most developers are left scratching their heads saying “Why didn’t Microsoft think of this?”.
The Harvester module of PROJEct scours the hard drives of a computer looking for all files that might hold VBA code.
Typically extents include DOT, DOC, XLS, XLA, PPT, PPA, BAS, CLS, FRM and TXT.
TXT?
Why not? Some text files contain digests of code, or code copied-and-pasted from free online sources.
Harvester is smart enough to recognize the start and end of a valid function and can extract much useful code from text files.
Then what?
The extracted code is stored in one long searchable string – in this week’s case 60MB.
The developer is offered a GUI form with extensive search capabilities which boil down to locating search strings using the super-fast INSTR function.
All relevant procedures are then displayed in the GUI form.
