Never Lose Data Again

Ever.

Whenever you open a workbook, either by choosing File, Open from the Excel menu or by double-clicking the file name in Explorer, make your first task a re-save.

Choose File, saveAs from the menu system (or if you are a professional, use the F12 function key) and save the file with a new name.

You can see in the screen shot above that I am enamored of increasing a sequential number in the file name to implement a little versioning scheme.

I have just opened version 005 and am in the process of saving it as version 006.

Only when I have saved the file with a new name (check the title bar) will I start making changes.

If I make a terrible mistake in my changes I can always drop this file and re-open the previous version and start again.

But all These Versions Will Take up Valuable Disk Space!
