ChrisGreaves.com – eMailer – Frequently Asked Questions

My policy is simple:

I never sell or rent your personal information (including email address and telephone numbers) to any third parties under any circumstances.

If you have any doubts about my feelings towards Spam email or telemarketing, please read the little essay at http://www.chrisgreaves.com/ContactChrisGreavesCOM.htm

Can I bypass the regular emails? Yes. At the very top of each email message is a link to the web page of archives for that course. You cn read all the lessons at once via your web browser.
Will the lessons be readable on my mobile device? Yes; every email is sent out in plain text with no images to facilitate quick and easy reading on-the-road.
Is there a limit to the number of courses I can take? You can subscribe to as many courses as you like. At the time you subscribe I will issue a single request-for-confirmation message so that I don’t get lured into sending emails on behalf of pranksters.
What courses are available, and what topics do they cover? Please use the table at the top of this page. I cover topics as diverse as esoteric facets of Visual Basic for Applications through Tips for users of Windows and on the my logical thoughts on articles that appear in newspapers. Some of the material will help you greatly in your work; some of the material will amuse you - I hope!
What if I accidentally delete or filter out your emailed lessons? Contact Me immediately and I will do my best to straighten you out. We like seeing smiles on client faces, even if the smiles are electronic.
If I submit a course for distribution, can I preview it ahead of any enrollees? Yes - I have a special facility whereby I can issue an entire course as a series of emails to one address at one time. We will let you inspect your own material in “Burst Mode” before it goes public.
Can I have a copy of the code to set up my own emailer system? Yes. I have a do-it-yourself kit that includes the source code to the Corre.dot template (but not the source code to Utils.dot).
What assistance do you provide in the preparation of my material? Quite a bit. You will be responsible for setting up the text in Microsoft Word documents in our format. I will explain the format and supply sample documents. You do not need any programming experience.
What must I do to have a course supported by the emailer? We accept material in most word processing formats, including WordPerfect, WordPro, WordPad and AmiPro.
How much do you charge? The correspondence course lessons are free. For on-site training I charge. Please visit ChrisGreaves.COM to learn more.
Why correspondence courses? The best reason is that it permits you to get a taste of a course before committing time and money to attending the course. You can arrive at a formal training session with an inkling of what it’s all about.Correspondence Courses aren’t for everyone, but they are suitable for people working out of home offices, people who would like to enhance their skills, and for people in offices who can’t afford the time to go on a course.Unlike classroom training, if a portion of a correspondence course doesn’t interest you, you needn’t spend time on it. Correspondence courses offer you the opportunity to enhance your skills in digestible units without leaving your home or office.
Can I switch email addresses? Strictly speaking, no, because the ONLY details I retain are your email address; I have no way of tying your name into a new email address, because I don’t know your name! However, if you are considering making a drastic change, such as switching ISPs, send me an email from your original address before you change, and I’ll try to accommodate you.
Will my employer pay for a regular classroom version of a course? Probably. Tell them that you can be a more effective employee, and you’ll save time by working more efficiently through better skills.
Where do I post questions about the course material? Please obtain the course author’s email address from the web page linked from the table at the top of this page. I can address questions about my own courses, but not about other authors.
If I am enrolled in four courses will I get four emails per day? Not necessarily. If you have requested Windows Tips once a day and WordVBA every two days and Hardware problems every three days, you’ll some days get three emails, some days only one.
Will you distribute my email address? No. I am not that kind of organization.
Will I get a certificate when I’ve completed a course? No. But on the other hand there are no examinations and no assignments.
Are there any extra “hidden” charges? No.
What’s the maximum length of a course? Most courses are no longer than 20 lessons. Some of the blog-like series are of indefinite length.
What happens if I suggest a grand enhancement to a lesson? Major or Minor, we will thank you! We update the material in that lesson and acknowledge your contribution. We are always striving to improve our quality, and our clients, even the free ones, are our most valued critics.
Are you "push" technology or "pull" technology Glad you asked. We appear to be "push", so if you are a schoolteacher and want your students to be receiving an email on Egyptian History once a week, we're PUSH.On the other hand, we are transformed into PULL by virtue of our subscriber-driven scheduling technology. It's the subscriber who decides to use us a "pull".
How often do the lessons arrive? Generally lessons are sent out once a week. That’s the nature of the material I offer. You can change the frequency between lessons, or ask that lessons be suspended while you are busy or away from your normal place. To do this you need only send me an email including the name of the course. You could just reply to the latest email lesson.
Why are the lessons sent as plain ASCII text? For reasons similar to the ones above. I’m interested more in passing on ideas about writing VBA code than in passing on VBA code.If you want VBA code I truly recommend that you visit Planet Source www.planet-source-code.com or Woody's Lounge www.wopr.com .If you want insights into writing VBA code? I hope that you’ll find it here.
What data about me do you retain? For each subscriber I hold your email address in a table in a Word document. That’s all I need. I don’t sell email addresses. Once you have completed a course, the most email you are going to get from me would be a rare notice of a new course. I too hate Spam (Please see About SPAM )
Are all the courses developed by you? Currently, yes, but our modular system allows us to splice in 3rd party courses. I will always let you know who is responsible for a course, us or them.
How do I un-subscribe? Click on the link to the newsletter’s home page (in the table above) and choose the Unsubscribe link.
How do I subscribe? Click on the link to the newsletter’s home page (in the table above) and choose the Subscribe link.
How do I change the frequency of mailings for a course? Click on the link to the newsletter’s home page (in the table above) and choose the Frequency link.
Who runs this web site and correspondence facility? Chris Greaves and some of his associates and colleagues. Chris Greaves is responsible for the generation and emission of emails to all subscribers. You can Contact Me by email, telephone or postal mail.
Why do you not send attachments with the WordVBA newsletter? Attachments are frowned upon by some organizations, and for good reason. Attached Templates are more suspect. Some of you won’t mind, but some will, and I’d rather not alienate potential enjoyment of the material. There’s another reason: I learn best by “doing”, and you may too. Issuing a template with the macro code in place isn’t good training for rolling up one’s sleeves and beginning to type (or to learn shortcuts to code generation).
Will you assist in the preparation of my material? Absolutely. We have tools that generate bookmarks and contents lists automatically.
Are you one of these advertising-supporting sites? No. The only advertising carried here is notice of new courses and other benefits obtainable directly through www.ChrisGreaves.com
Will you run a course that I’ve developed? Absolutely. Contact Me and ask for my course generation guidelines.
What control do I have over my subscriptions? A lot. You can suspend the emails, or change the frequency of individual courses. You can request back-issues to be sent (in case you inadvertently deleted a lesson from your Inbox).
What is a course? A course is any material that can be issued as plain ASCII text in a serial manner. You could publish a course on “How to grow cut flowers” for all we care, although that IS a strange subject.
