That's not who we are

'What president ever talks like that? That's not who we are'

Now here’s a quote from an email from a one-time friend of mine: “I am very satisfied that Trump is back in office. Good riddance to Biden and I shudder to think that we could have ended up with someone like Harris! YIKES!”

How can I reconcile these two points of view?

On one hand my ex-friend exclaims the joy over the person who is now in charge. On the other hand the person who used to be in charge points out that people never talk like that?

Obviously the person who is now in charge DOES talk like that; hence the objection.

But in the case from which these examples are taken clearly the person who is now in charge was elected by a democratic process. It follows that generally speaking, the majority of the voters signalled a preference for the person who is now in charge.

Clearly the voting population endorses candidates who DO speak like that.
