The Encryption Process
How Long Does It Take?
Less than nineteen hours!
I have just completed re-formatting and then re-TrueCrypting an old 400GB IDE drive on my old Big Beige Box.
The formatting took an hour or so, maybe.
In the screen snapshot you can see that there are two reported sizes. The IDE drive is nominally a 400GB drive. Windows XP reports it as having 372GB.
I decided to run a full scan on the formatted drive prior to TrueCrypting it. may was well. The scan took about three hours.
I started the encryption of the entire volume at 17:45 p.m. last night and it completed at 12:15 p.m today.
That’s close to nineteen hours.
You will be TrueCrypting a USB 2.0 drive – much faster than an IDE – on a machine that is almost sure to be faster than my old Big Beige Box.
If you start the TrueCrypt process when you close your office, it should be complete when you arrive for work the next morning.
